The Director General of the Ministry of Health Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Dr. Ahmed Mohamud Jama, has today launched a research project on mental health disorders, which is a collaboration of the Ministry of Health Development, its Department of Mental Health, Universities in the country, such as Amoud University, Hargeisa University, Ethiopian Universities in Jigjiga and Addis Ababa, Kings College University in England and also Dalarna University in Sweden.
This research project is the first to be carried out in the country, the president of Amoud University, Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril, the former president of Amoud University, Professor Saleebaan Ahmed Guled, the vice-president of Hargeisa University (Academic and Research vice-president) – Dr. Fuad Abdi Obsiiye, also gave different speeches on the occasion of the opening, there were also various events based on the objectives and the stages he went through to become one. Dr. Christ Williot from Kings College and the leader of this research project, Dr. Nasir Warfaa from Jigjiga University, Dr. Fadumo from Dalarna University in Sweden spoke on their behalf about the importance of this research.
After that, officials from the mental health stakeholders who were among the international and local organizations that work with the Ministry of Health Development, especially the mental department as well as the private mental health centers, Idil Mohamed Rashid from the Somaliland Mental Health Support organization and Dr. Adan from the Mankaab organization welcomed this research.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Liiban Ahmed Hirsi, and the Director of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Mustafe Mohamed Ahmed expressed the importance of this project and the role they have taken as a department.Director General of the Ministry of Health Development Dr. Ahmed Mohamud Jama.
The event was officially opened by a number of valuable speakers on the importance of this kind of research in the development and treatment of people with mental illnesses, who promised that the Ministry will closely monitor what they need and work with the Universities and the Ministry officials in charge.
