Dissemination of Somaliland National MHH Assessment

The Ministry of Health Development of the Republic of Somaliland, in collaboration with UNICEF and partner agencies, today organized a high-level conference to present research data collected from the Maroodi-Jeex and Togdheer regions.

The research focused on the level of knowledge and understanding that society has about menstruation, with an in-depth study of the situation of girls aged 10 to 19 years. The study examined data from many aspects that directly affect the lives of young girls, their education and their health.

Key issues discussed in the data included: The impact of menstruation on girls’ attendance and performance in schools; The availability, quality and adequacy of menstrual health services; The financial burden on girls’ families; Social stigma and misconceptions about menstruation; The impact of discrimination and shaming on the confidence, mental health and future of young girls.

The high-level meeting was attended by Ministers, Directors-General, and representatives from the Ministries of Water, Social Affairs, Education and Local Government, along with civil society organizations, donor agencies, members of Parliament, local authorities, and individuals campaigning to combat stereotypes and discrimination against young girls during menstruation.

During the conference, the views of experts, the experiences of organizations working on this issue, and practical recommendations were exchanged to develop policies and programs that address the needs of young girls, and ensure that they have access to quality health and education services, free from discrimination and marginalization.

Overall, this conference was an important forum to strengthen awareness, share scientific information, and collaborate between government, international, and civil society organizations, to improve the health, education, and dignity of girls in Somaliland, and create an environment where girls can grow up healthy, confident, and have equal opportunities for their future.
