Nairobi, Kenya – The Minister of Health Development of Somaliland, Mr. Hussein Bashir Hirsi, attended a conference in Nairobi, Kenya, regarding the new Somaliland Immunization Plan 2027, jointly organized by the Gavi Alliance, UNICEF, and WHO.The Minister was accompanied by the Director of the Planning and Policy Department, the Director of the Immunization and Child Health Department, and heads from the Immunization and Child Health Department.During the conference, in-depth discussions were held on the new plan to strengthen and accelerate Somaliland’s immunization program, with special emphasis placed on expanding the reach of immunization services, reducing the number of unvaccinated children, and improving the quality, sustainability, and equity of immunization services.

It was also agreed that two new vaccines would be introduced into Somaliland’s immunization program by 2027; these are crucial for strengthening the prevention of dangerous diseases. The two vaccines are:1. HPV Vaccine (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine): A vaccine to prevent the HPV virus, which is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. 2. Hepatitis B vaccine administered at birth (Hepatitis B Birth Dose):This vaccine will be administered to the infant at birth to prevent Hepatitis B infection—specifically mother-to-child transmission during delivery—and to reduce the risk of future health complications.Somaliland’s new 2027 vaccination plan is part of the Ministry of Health Development’s efforts to ensure that children in Somaliland receive quality, consistent, accessible, and equitable vaccination services.

This meeting also provided a vital opportunity for the Ministry of Health Development and international health partners to jointly discuss priorities, strategies, and plans to further strengthen Somaliland’s vaccination program in the coming years.
